Blending Scotch whisky requires the combined expertise of many skilled distillery craftsmen. David Stewart, Master Blender at William Grant & Sons since 1974, is the longest serving Master Blender in the Scotch whisky industry. He and his apprentice of four years, Brian Kinsman, are responsible for making Grant's one of the finest Scotch whiskies in the world. They are assisted by the teams of coopers, distillers, maturation experts and other craftsmen working at the Girvan Distillery in Ayrshire, Scotland. It is the home of Grant's.
All Scotch whiskies that go into the Grant's blend have matured in oak casks to ensure that they develop complexity, mellowness and character. A typical blend will consist of 20-30 malt whiskies and 1-3 grain whiskies - hence the need for blending expertise. Why so many whiskies? Well the Master Blender is trying to achieve a particular taste, and whisky, being an entirely natural product, varies from month to month and year to year.
The Master Blender will use his skill to balance out the seasonal and regional changes, producing a consistent, distinctive taste each time. It is like a vintner, carefully selecting and blending varieties of grape to craft the perfect wine, or a Master Chef choosing and using the best ingredients to make his mouth-watering signature dish. Grant's comparatively high proportion of malts - added for extra depth and character - sometimes makes the Master Blender's task a little more difficult, but the results are well worth it!
